Light and video installations for TIW 2022

Transatlantic Innovation Week

Betty Mü and WE ARE VIDEO design light and video installations between the US Consulate and the Bavarian State Chancellery

On the occasion of this year’s Transatlantic Innovation Week (25 to 29 April 2022) in Munich, three light and video installations by Betty Mü and WE ARE VIDEO can be seen around Munich’s Prinz-Carl-Palais. The artists are thus setting a visible sign for the transatlantic week of action in public space, taking up the main themes of sustainability, green innovations and cooperation. The light action begins on the occasion of the annual Earth Day on Friday 22 April 2022 and runs until Sunday 01 May 2022 – daily from 20:30 to 23:00.

Transatlantic Innovation Week reflects German-American cooperation in business, research, politics and science for green innovations and a sustainable future. Germany and the US want to use their leadership to protect, renew and advance shared sustainability goals.

For Betty Mü, as well as Raphael Kurig and Christian Gasteiger of WE ARE VIDEO, these goals serve as inspiration. With three individual installations, they thematise the interplay of nature and technology and the bridge-building between the two countries.

A façade projection at the Prinz-Carl-Palais revolves around this interplay: methods from nature serve as models for innovative techniques. The latter have become indispensable for making life on earth more sustainable. But the projection itself may also be considered innovative through the mapping technique. Last but not least, the façade of the Palais is playfully staged.

The second installation uses a laser beam to build a visual bridge over Prinzregentenstraße and the Isar river. Over a distance of more than 1 km, it connects the Prinz-Carl-Palais with the Friedensengel. Lasers have numerous applications in technology and research. Here, however, they also symbolise a connection across distances.

For the third installation, a semicircular wall of water is created in the Köglmühlbach near the Prinz-Carl-Palais fountain as a moving, three-dimensional screen. Through projections, natural structures literally flow into artificial ones. Quotes from, among others, Prime Minister Markus Söder, Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter and US Ambassador Amy Gutmann are incorporated.

Client: Joint commission by the Consulate General of the United States of America, the Bavarian State Chancellery and the City of Munich.
