Every year, the Leipzig Light Festival commemorates the Monday demonstrations of October 9, 1989, the peaceful revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall. For the Light Festival 2022, Betty Mü was asked as one of three international artists to participate with a future-oriented light installation on Leipzig’s Burgplatz.
What does it mean to work as an individual in a group? What unites our society today? What future issues do we need to get involved in? The installation »The ME and the WE« raises fundamental questions.
From the outside, it resembles an oversized walk-in kaleidoscope: eleven meters long, built in the shape of a hexagon and equipped with mirrors and LED screens.
Visitors move through this tunnel of light, bringing it to life in a sense: the self-image of the individual fragments and multiplies into a crowd, animated graphic and typokinetic elements as well as a soundscape of sounds and voices complement the immersive experience. The recorded statements were created in an interdisciplinary workshop with students.
At the center of the installation is the »We« of »We are the people« (»Wir sind das Volk») the most famous slogan from the fall of ’89. We can change. We are the hope. We are the future. Each and every one of us. With her installation, Betty Mü delivers a passionate plea for lived sustainability and social engagement.
